What happened to the traditional Web Development?
As far as I remember 10 years ago when I started my first design business, webmasters/web developer were really important people since they were the gatekeepers to the cyber space. Only they knew how to add stuff and bring life to our websites, but nowadays things changed quite a lot and somehow “we” lost our position since the everyday “user” became his own webmaster.
I suppose as evolution goes and technologies improve the meaning of the word webmaster, we are no longer attached to the highly geeky person that knows how to write weird words and phrases that somehow power websites. Things now are so different that everyone can have his own website, or blog, or e-store, without even knowing a tiny bit of html or other programming language. The Internet world in now ruled by Free Content Management Systems.
The whole thing is that for the price of $3.95 per month, you can get your own web hosting account with already preinstalled content management system and within 30 minutes after you open your account, you can start editing you own website. You don’t need to know anything - with self explanatory menus you can start writing your own wordpress blog or company website. This power given to the user is killing web developers since they are loosing their positions as their roles become less and less important.
It is true, in less than 30 minutes you can have your own wordpress website and join the Internet experience. You can even choose from the tons of free wordpress themes and get the best looking “web design” with the click of a button. Its so easy!
The world is spinning up so fast, that now webmasters are no longer what they used to be. Nowadays webmasters are more of a journalists and writers (content creators) rather than the coders and developers that they used to be. This is so sad. People don’t need us any more.
